  • Polystyrene foam comes in either molded or fabricated forms. The fabricated product is molded in large buns, wire cut, and glued to produce the desired result. It can also be hot wire cut and laminated to corrugated. Both molded and fabricated polyethylene can be used to provide similar protection for an item. The volume required will most likely determine whether the polyethylene is molded or fabricated for the particular application. Molded EPS will require a mold to produce the parts. The typical mold for the molded polyethylene item could cost $15,000 to $25,000. These molded take approximately 4-6 weeks to produce.

  • Polystyrene accommodates many cushioning applications because it is offered in a variety of densities. This material density range is from .75 to 6.0 pounds per cubic foot. This allows the designer to select the density that is right for the product he is trying to protect. Weight is generally the factor that determines the density of foam that is required. Polystyrene does not have multiple drop capability and should be used when the shipping environment does not require multiple shipping cycles.
